THE LAW
And Rightly Dividing the Word Reconsidered

These are the foundational truths necessary for a proper understanding of the word of God. It is impossible to be sound in doctrine or to teach the scriptures correctly without a working knowledge of these principles. This series of studies covers all of the questions most frequently asked by students of the Bible.

Table of Contents

From the book:

Preface

In 2 Timothy 2:15 the Bible says, Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The first command is to study. Study is work. It takes effort to be a good student. This is more than reading the Bible. It is more than listening to sermons from the Bible. We are called upon to put forth the labor necessary to master the Bible text.

To shew thyself approved. Study is not entirely personal. There are tests, if you will. There are exams. There is an accounting. Someone is going to approve or disapprove of our life and work and we must study to gain approval.

Unto God. The ultimate judge is God. We may please men but displease God. We may have the praise of mortals but the censure of the Eternal. We may know the scorn and derision of humanity yet hear the “well done” of Deity. We study the word of God to gain the approval of the God of the word.

A workman. Good study is a good work. Good study produces good works. The Lord is not looking for slackers and mystics but diligent men and women.

That needeth not to be ashamed… There is no reason we should ever have to be ashamed because a lost man, an infidel or a cultist puts us on the spot and we cannot stand up for what we believe and cannot give a proper answer. There is no reason we should ever know the shame of failure to live a holy life, of a ruined testimony or of a pattern of wasted opportunities. There are shameful lives. There will be shameful outcomes at the judgment seat of Christ. Such are unnecessary. Proper study removes the possibility of such shame.

Rightly dividing. These words reveal many truths. First, the word contains divisions. We should identify and respect them. Second, there is a proper way to divide the word. It is not only right to make divisions but there are correct, clearly discernable divisions. Third, the word can be divided improperly. This must be avoided by any sincere student.

The word of truth. As a young Christian I studied, and profited greatly from, the works of authors who rightly divided the word. Sadly, they did not believe the word to be the truth. They would alter and amend the Bible text with consistency, subjecting the word of God to their opinions. While the reader may find much of what is contained in this book available in other texts, what sets this work apart is our refusal to cast doubt upon the Holy Bible. We will rightly divide THE word of TRUTH.

There are many excellent works available on dispensational truth. Almost every Bible student in the last century has enjoyed and benefited from Dispensational Truth and other books by Clarence Larkin. M. R. Dehann’s fine teaching in The Law and the study Bible and correspondence course put together under the editorship of C. I. Schofield have been of value to countless Christians through the years. Lesser known but highly valuable are the studies put into print by Graham Scroggie. In fact, much of what the reader will find in this work is based upon what I found as a youth in the works just mentioned.

So why another volume covering much the same material?

First and foremost, all of these men considered themselves to be superior to the text of the Bible. Each of them would alter the Holy Bible if and when they considered it defective. There was a need to put the proper principles of rightly dividing the word into print in a book that would not undermine the student’s faith in the scripture while he studied the scripture. In this volume we will accept the Bible as 100% correct and will not make any attempts to change it to suit our fancies.

Second, we are not able to freely distribute books written by others to impoverished saints around the world. At the time of this printing we have sent almost two million recorded sermons and 300,000 books to men and women in over 130 nations at no charge. We have also given missionaries and national workers permission to print our books without financial obligation. We could not do this with works belonging to others.

Third, there are some areas where good men differ. As beneficial as the works of other writers have been and continue to be, the areas where it seems a matter could be better explained or more correctly interpreted require an updated treatment of these subjects.

It is our hope and prayer that these lessons will prove clear, easy to read and understand, and of profound help to the sincere student of the word of God. These lessons are not intended to give the whole of these matters, but to give the reader a sufficient foundation upon which to build a lifetime of profitable Bible study.
